Lighting the Infinite Abyss

In any cinematic endeavor lighting is key to the success of the project. But, how does one go about achieving realistic lighting for a story that takes place out of this world and is filmed entirely on a sound stage. The professionals working on the film Gravity (2013) had to think outside of the box; and in doing so found themselves inside of the ‘light box.’ The task of realistically depicting a massive light source (such as the sun) didn’t discourage the Visual Effects team and their movie within a movie – As they re-imagined studio lighting. The filmmakers got it all right in terms of artistic lighting (maybe not science though) and as a result the film is a visual masterpiece.
